Songwriting
Last week was a great week for inspiration and creativity. The Summer has taken me to many festivals and shows around the UK and in Bahrain, which has of course been fantastic.. but there is a time and a place for everything and come the end of August each year, i’m ready to settle back down with a proper bed and some time to myself..
And i’ve been enjoying that time to myself a lot hehe! Time to get out the guitar and wander round the kitchen writing and playing and playing and writing. And this time i’ve noticed a change in the way i write. Up until recently, a song always formed from the melody and chords first, then certain words seem to fit in certain places and from that the meaning and other words develop.
Last week was refreshing because i seemed to lose my judgement of the words i write.. i just let the pen skim over the paper and whatever wanted to come out came. Their was no conciousness of rhyming or scanning, just feeling, just thoughts. Later along came the guitar and i knew that somehow the words could fit into the musical idea i was playing with.. and with a bit of tweaking here and there, they did!
It means that the 2 songs i completed, Deep Within and Live for Today, play a lot more on rhythm of words to create the melody rather than my old tendency to create melody within one syllable. Hence i would describe Live for Today, for example, as a cross between punk, rap and dance music!
Each song is a reflection of the mood or state of being i’m in when it comes out, and seeing as we’re all in various states of being at different times, so it makes sense that musical styles vary as well.
The reason for dance music’s influence in these songs, is because i’m very excited to have just started making music with producer and DJ Chameleon. The connection was evident the first time we met, so we spent one evening last week in his studio laying down beats, bass and synth lines then a variety of acoustic instruments on top.. and the connection definitely inspired the music. We virtually finished the whole track, mix n all, that night! Think psychedelic global beats.. a dub-by bassline, grooving beats, psychedelic synth sounds and ethnic and tribal sounds with traditional acoustic instruments for peppering on top! I’m going to put it up on youtube or something, so you guys can have a listen and give some feedback. Think it will be called Sufic Mist by Moonstone vs Chameleon. While we write what we feel, we also want as many other people as possible to be feelin’ it as well!.. so please don’t hesitate to be in touch.
Off to play the new tunes at a gig in Kilburn next week, so pop by if you’re around!
