Sarangi

The sarangi originates from North India, although there are only a few hundred performers left on the subcontinent. It has existed since ancient Vedic times, and in it’s present form for the past 200 years. There are 38 strings- 3 of which are bowed, the other 35 are “sympathetic strings” which resonate in the background to create a deep, ethereal sound.
The sarangi has been used to accompany courtesans, which may help to explain why so few play this incredible instrument, considered the hardest of all Indian instruments. It is traditionally used to play Indian classical music, though Milli incorporates her understanding of Indian classical styles into her own songs.
